Dear FUSD Community,
Classified Employee Recognition
This week, our district celebrated Classified staff as part of Classified School Employees Week in California. These employees are the behind-the-scenes backbone of a school district providing services including accounting/payroll, data support, paraeducators, custodial services, maintenance, transportation - all vital in supporting what happens in the classroom. Classified staff also fill important roles in school front offices such as school secretary, registrar and attendance clerks. They are often the first faces you see on campus and set the tone for the educational product we provide. Please join me in thanking this special group of staff for all they do for our students.
At this week’s Board Meeting, we recognized the District’s three nominees for Alameda County Classified Employee of the Year – Sandy Green (Human Resources Credential Technician), Kathy Mitchell (School Secretary – Grimmer Elementary) and Bobbie Platt (Secretary – Special Education Department). I am happy to report Ms. Green was recently chosen among the county’s six recipients of the Award. Congratulations to Sandy and to all the great nominees throughout the County!
Drive-Thru Graduations
At Wednesday’s Board Meeting, the Board of Education approved a request from our District’s high schools to move forward with plans for drive-thru graduation ceremonies next month. This decision was made following updated public health guidelines from Alameda County that eased restrictions regarding vehicle-based gatherings. The drive through graduation will be considered similar to a curbside pick-up. Our six high school principals have met with the Fremont Police Department to formulate a plan they feel will both honor the Class of 2020 and follow all established safety guidelines. More details will be sent to families soon. Please be aware these plans will be based on current conditions and are subject to change. The District is moving forward with contingency plans should the drive-thru ceremonies be canceled.
School Reopening
The FUSD Task Force has been formed to focus on the closure of the current school year and collaborating on a plan for the start of the 2020-21 school year. The Task Force is looking at all aspects involved in starting the school year under a variety of possible scenarios. As of today, we expect schools to be open for the first day of school on Wednesday, August 26th. Families will be updated throughout the process and have multiple opportunities to provide feedback. This is a very fluid situation and I ask for your patience as we work to balance instruction with the overall goal of keeping students and staff safe.
Budget Update
Two presentation’s were made at Wednesday’s Board Meeting regarding the effects on FUSD’s 2020-21 budget due to COVID-19 and the Governor’s May-revision to the state budget. I encourage you to reach out to state legislators and ask for their support in helping schools meet their budgetary challenges by demanding Full and Fair Funding for public education.
School Calendar
At Wednesday’s meeting, the Board of Education approved the instructional calendar for the 2020-21 school year and for the following three years.  The new school year will begin Wednesday, August 26, 2020, and will conclude Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Breaks of note include Thanksgiving - November 23-27, 2020, Winter Break - December 21, 2020, through January 1, 2021, and Spring Break – April 2-9, 2021.
Immunization Update
Families are reminded that immunization requirements will continue to remain in place even with the COVID-19 circumstances. If your student is outstanding on any immunizations, they need to be completed before the beginning of the school year. Visit the District website for more information.
Enjoy the long weekend and thank you for your support.
